Coming in at number 1 on the New York Times 52 Places to Go in 2014 list, Cape Town, South Africa has also made it as this week’s destination of choice. In the wake of Nelson Mandela’s death, this town is sure to draw in a great deal of visitors, but that’s not to say it’s any less special. Cape Town is the World Design Capital and listed as one of the world’s 10 most loved cities, according to CNN. From fashion to architecture to art this place will surely satisfy any design lover’s needs. And for the adventure lover? They have that covered too. Try riding a cable car up (and back down) Table Mountain, the world’s highest commercial abseil, dive into the ocean to swim with a quarter of the world’s shark species, or hang out at the African Penguin Colony at Boulder Beach. Last but not least, they have great food too! South Africa’s coast hosts some of the world’s finest tuna, so you can bet your bottom dollar that South Africa gets first dibs before the rest of the tuna is shipped off to Japan. Whether you’d like to try Samp, a maize dish made by the Xhosa, African spinach, or Ethiopian flatbreads, Cape Town’s got it. Later at night make your way to Long Street to revel in the party scene and drink and dance the night away. Design? Check. Adventure? Check. Food? Check. Plane ticket? You’d better start working on it.
